Tier System

Train at the Right Level. Grow at the Right Pace.

Not every athlete is at the same level — and they shouldn't be trained like they are. Synergy's four-tier system groups athletes by skill level so no child feels overwhelmed, demoralized, or unchallenged. Your child trains alongside peers who push them just enough to grow — without breaking their confidence.

As athletes improve and demonstrate readiness, coaches promote them to the next tier. This isn't based on age or how long they've been in the program — it's based on effort, skill development, and coachability. Every promotion is earned.

How Tier Placement Works

1

Every new athlete starts with a player evaluation to assess their current skill level

2

Based on the evaluation, they are placed in the tier that best matches their ability

3

Coaches monitor progress throughout the season and recommend promotions when earned

4

End-of-season evaluations measure growth and determine tier placement for the next season

5

Parents receive a detailed report card with performance data and recommendations

Your child is never just a number at Synergy — no matter where they start.

Tier 1: Beginner

Best for: Athletes who are new to basketball or have limited experience with organized sports.

This is where every journey can start — and there's no shame in that. Beginner tier athletes learn the building blocks of basketball in a patient, encouraging environment. The emphasis is on repetition, confidence, and falling in love with the process.

Training Focus:

  • Basic ball handling — stationary dribbling, dominant hand control, learning to protect the ball
  • Shooting fundamentals — proper form, layup technique, close-range finishing
  • Passing basics — chest pass, bounce pass, when and where to pass
  • Defensive stance and positioning — learning to stay in front of the ball
  • Rules of the game, court awareness, and sportsmanship

Promotion criteria: Consistent effort, mastery of basic ball handling and shooting form, ability to follow team instructions, and a positive attitude during training.

Tier 2: Intermediate

Best for: Athletes who have a solid grasp of fundamentals and are ready for more complexity and competitive play.

Intermediate athletes know the basics — now it's time to refine them. Training picks up in pace and detail. Athletes begin applying skills in live situations and learning how to think on the court, not just react.

Training Focus:

  • Ball handling progressions — off-hand development, combo moves, dribbling under pressure
  • Shooting development — mid-range game, free throws, shot selection
  • Team concepts introduction — pick and roll, give and go, basic motion offense
  • Defensive rotations and help-side principles
  • Introduction to controlled scrimmages and in-house competition

Promotion criteria: Demonstrated improvement in skill execution under game-speed conditions, understanding of basic team concepts, defensive consistency, and coachability.

Tier 3: Advanced

Best for: Athletes with strong fundamentals who are ready for higher-intensity training and more strategic play.

This is where athletes start separating themselves. Training becomes more physically demanding, more detailed, and more game-realistic. Advanced tier players are expected to lead by example and push their teammates to be better.

Training Focus:

  • Advanced ball handling — game-speed crossovers, hesitation moves, creating separation
  • Shooting under pressure — contested shots, catch-and-shoot, movement off screens
  • Offensive system execution — reading defenses, making the right play, floor spacing
  • Defensive intensity — on-ball pressure, closeouts, transition defense
  • Strength and conditioning integration — plyometrics, agility, basketball-specific movement
  • Film review introduction — learning to watch and learn from game footage

Promotion criteria: High-level skill execution at game speed, leadership on and off the court, strong defensive effort, ability to execute within a team system, and commitment to the process.

Tier 4: Competitive

Best for: Serious athletes committed to elite-level development, tournament play, and reaching their highest potential.

The Competitive tier is Synergy's top level. This is for athletes who are ready to train like it matters — because it does. Small rosters, maximum reps, four practices per week, film study, and strategic tournament play against the best competition available. This is where potential becomes performance.

Training Focus:

  • Day 1: Progressive skill development — shooting mechanics, game-speed execution, advanced ball handling
  • Day 2: Sport-specific conditioning — plyometrics, isometrics, basketball movement patterns
  • Day 3: Advanced team concepts — transition play, spacing, court vision, defensive rotations
  • Day 4: Film review sessions — break down game film to sharpen Basketball IQ

Additional Competitive Tier Benefits:

  • Strategic tournament selection against diverse, high-caliber opponents
  • Exposure to college scouts and showcase environments (9th–12th grade)

Entry criteria: Athletes must be promoted from the Advanced tier by coach recommendation, or earn placement through a tryout evaluation. Competitive tier athletes are expected to maintain a high standard of commitment, effort, and sportsmanship at all times.

The right level of challenge is what turns potential into progress. At Synergy, your child is never lost in the crowd and never left behind.

Every tier has a purpose. Every promotion is earned. Every athlete has a path.
